It’s all in the eyes…
It is said that they eyes are the windows to the soul… so it makes sense to have killer brows to frame them, right?
Hello my name is Nicola, and I am a brow-a-holic.
Some of the most breathtakingly beautiful women in Hollywood are famous for their brows – Cara Delevigne, Rachel Weisz, Camilla Belle… Never head of them? These three are the Angelina Jolie’s of the eyebrow world to a beauty therapist – or better yet, a brow expert.
My fascination with eyebrows developed at a younger age when I realised I had been given dad’s side of the family’s eyebrow shape. All of the Pollocks have strong brow features with great length and width. Sometimes, in the beauty industry, you will come across beauty therapists who consider themselves brow junkies. I am one of them.
Every time I meet someone for the first time, I look at their eyebrows. It is always what I remember most after meeting them too.
So, naturally when I fell into this job , I immediately migrated towards the waxing world, and particularly the brow world. I love everything about brows, the fact that they come in different shapes and sizes. You can be so creative with eyebrows – I often compare the process of brow shaping to picking the perfect curtains for a beautiful window! Whether it be a strong arch, soft brow, thick, long, one brow even. I love it!
That being said, sometimes, in the beauty industry (or at home if clients take custody of their own brows!), some therapists get a bit too carried away with brow shaping and have a tendency to take too much off… NO, NO, NO!!! It is always best, in hair and beauty to simply enhance the client’s natural features and embrace what they have. It allows not only for better maintenance, but also a softer more suited look. Your brows were grown a certain way, the beauty angels just simply clean them up!
Over the years, I have done so many brow reshapes from clients wanting to grow out their slightly too thin brows into more natural, thicker brows. I cannot encourage this process enough…
Yes, the growing out process can be daunting. But, it’s nothing a great brow powder/brow pencil can’t fix. Basically, when my clients come in for their first brow shape with me, I allow 20 minutes for the appointment. Firstly, the client is handed a mirror, the eyebrows are cleansed and combed. Then, together with the client watching in the mirror, we discuss what they are liking/ not liking about their eyebrows, whether it be colour, length, width, greys – you name it! After working out a realistic goal together with their ideas and my recommendations, we sat a plan out.
This is where the fun begins. Clients are instructed to grow them out… That’s right, no tweeting or waxing for 6 weeks! Eyebrows will look untidy if they aren;t shaped during this process, but in steps our new best friends, the brow pencil/powder.
By applying a pencil/powder to the brows to shape, suddenly the hairs sitting outside the brow line in the growing process become less prominent! I always welcome my clients to bring in a powder/pencil so I can show them how to shape them to make it easier for them at home.
Then, 4-6 weeks alter, the brows are reshaped and bang – done.
The rest is just simple maintenance.
The shape of your eyebrows really does change your expressions – if you don’t believe me I can happily post photos of when Tessa, my business partner waxed off the top of her brows when she was 14.
I seriously urge you, if you have been thinking of a brow transformation to grow them out… 4 weeks of unruly brows for lifetime of brow euphoria.
Holy brow, it’s definitely worth it!
Until next time.

We’ve all done it. You’re walking through the supermarket, with a trolley full of your favourite Cadbury block fresh fruit and you spot the personal care aisle.
Taking a sharp turn down, you pass the toothpaste, deodorant, tampons and finally reach the section that sends every hairdresser into a state of fright… The Box Colour Shelf.
I saw a girlfriend recently. She too is an owner of a hair salon. “How’s the salon going babe?” She asked me. “Great,” I answered quickly. “It’s pumping, our team are on point, everything is really wonderful.” I pondered for a second and wondered if either of us believed what I had said.
